He won the Cold War. Right. And Dennis Kucinich will bring us world peace. Apparently Truman, Eisenhower, JFK, LBJ, and Nixon were all a bunch of schlemiels, standing around wringing their hands. Forget the hagiography plaguing us from the moment of his death through the recent Republican presidential debates---Ronald Reagan loved the Cold War. It was what brought him to power, along with repulsive racial pandering (Welfare queens drive Cadillacs around the ghetto!), ecological know-knownothingism (Trees cause pollution!), and black-helicopter style paranoia (Medicare is the road to slavery!). So why would he want it to end? He promoted the Red Menace whenever he could, buoyed by decades of outright, ass-saving lies from the CIA and the rest of our National Security apparatus about Soviet capabilities and riches.
In fact, as we now know, the USSR--that colossal trash heap of commissars, nuclear weapons, prison gulags, environmental catastrophes, and bad vodka--had been ready to crash and burn for years by the time the Gipper barged into the White House like a rockie cop with his service revolver cocked.
So, yes, the Cold War ended, much as it would have anyway. And in the bargain, we got Iran-Contra, a mountain range of deficits, the S & L scandal, Latin American death squads, and a few hundred thousand preventable AIDS deaths. Still, got to give the guy a little credit: He was a hell of an actor.
